Filters are some of the smallest and cheapest parts on a heavy machine, yet they protect the most expensive ones: the engine, the fuel injection system and the hydraulic pumps. A filter that does not fit properly, or one that is left in service too long, lets dirt reach components that cost many times more to repair.
The four filters every machine depends on
Air filter
The air filter keeps dust out of the engine intake. On construction and mining sites the air is full of fine particles, so the air filter loads up quickly. Many machines use a primary element and a secondary (safety) element; the secondary element should stay clean and is usually replaced every second or third primary change.
Fuel filter
Modern diesel injection systems work with very tight tolerances. Fuel filters and water separators remove dirt and water before they reach the pump and injectors. Draining the water separator regularly is one of the simplest ways to protect an injection system.
Oil filter
The engine oil filter captures metal wear particles and soot. It should always be replaced together with the engine oil, never reused.
Hydraulic filter
Hydraulic systems are sensitive to contamination. Return and pilot filters keep the oil clean enough for valves and pumps to work smoothly. Contaminated hydraulic oil is a common cause of slow movements and early pump wear.
How to choose the right filter
- Start from the part number. Check the number printed on the old filter or in the machine’s parts manual. The part number tells you the exact size, thread, micron rating and bypass valve setting.
- Match the specification, not just the size. Two filters can look the same but have different filtration efficiency or pressure ratings.
- Use cross-references carefully. Filter brands publish cross-reference numbers between each other. Confirm the cross-reference with your supplier before ordering.
- Follow the service interval in the operator’s manual, and shorten it when the machine works in very dusty or wet conditions.
