Ordering a spare part by its description alone, such as “seal kit for excavator”, often leads to the wrong item. The same machine model can use different parts depending on its serial number, engine option or market. The part number removes that uncertainty.
Where to find the part number
- Stamped or printed on the old part, its label or its packaging.
- In the machine’s parts catalog or parts manual, listed by assembly.
- On previous invoices or delivery notes for the same machine.
If the number on the old part is worn away, the machine’s model and serial number (from the identification plate) help your supplier look it up in the parts catalog.
What to send when you ask for a quotation
- The part number (or several, if you need a set).
- The machine brand, model and serial number.
- The quantity you need.
- A clear photo of the old part and its label, if available.
With this information a supplier can confirm the right part, check alternatives and give you availability without back-and-forth messages.
Superseded and interchangeable numbers
Manufacturers sometimes replace a part number with a newer one when a part is improved. A good supplier will tell you when a number has been superseded, so you receive the current version of the part.
